Oh yeah, that nothing sounds like a Cumins. Does it Hey? It’S Tim Pickup truck plus SV talk Today, I’m driving a 2025 Ram, 2500 Laram Sport crew cab, four-wheel drive. It does have the sport package, which I’ll tell you more about this. As far as when we do a walk around this vehicle, So in this video I’m going to take this truck for a drive, I’ve been talking to the members at forum.
ickuptalk.com and they were talking about this truck. I was talking teasing about when I was going to get it. I had some photos before they arrived and we talked about whether or not this new 6.7 L Cumins is more efficient on Leaden, Interesting enough.
It wasn’t about towing so much, but on a drive is this more efficient? Now I’m still trying to track down a 2024 model. Do some comparisons, but I may go to fuel.com and see if I can’t post information as well Put it on the screen. So I’m going to do it very simple for you guys, I’m going to drive 50 mi west turn around drive 50 mi east.
The drive will be through some cities. Little towns in Nebraska, let’s be clear: Population 500,000, but I’ll – be some slower driving I’ll do like uh 65 down to 45 down to 25, Then I’ll turn on and come back, And so it won’t be all highway driving. So I’ll give you the best taste. I can what the fuel economy is going to be in this. So if you’re, a fleet, buyer and you’re sending your guys out in these trucks, you can have a better idea of what the fuel economy is going to be like with this Cumins.
And then, when I’m done with the drive, then I will pull over and I’ll. Do a walk around so that way we have accurate number, I’m going to go ahead and see. If I can do this as far as find the screen that tells me the fuel economy And there it is, And I’m going to hold down the okay button and I’m going to reset it And there we go So we are reset. Now It has a full tank of diesel, They dropped off my house, yes, uh was no two days ago And uh. I didn’t drive it the first day I drove about a mile today, So I really haven’t driven it very much at all.
So it’s filled up with diesel. Unfortunately, it’s hard to do click-, toclick comparisons at gas stations, because diesel foams and I’ve never had good luck with that as far as getting an accurate number, So I’m going to go ahead and hit the road and I’ll give you an update as we get closer To the 50 mi mark and we’ll get on this road I’ll tell you what the uh RPMs are doing about 65 mph, So we’ll be back in just a second Okay. What am I driving? Yes, this is the inside of the 2025 Ram. 2500 Nothing’s changed substantially, but they’ve made a variety of small changes that will add up.
First of all, the shifter right here We have a column shifter standard throughout the lineup. Now, there’s no sport, shifter no turn dial because heavy heavy duty rolled Uh. They want the shifter here. Snow plowing, really good access for it. There Tradesman guys worked guys.
They just moved all there. So that’s all done. We have the bigger screen in this model. This is a Laramie Sport. I do have chargers here: Two phone chargers – big cup holders, This slides back to reveal more storage space.
I have my trailer brake gain controller there. My diesel exhaust um brake towh hall different parking sensors there, And then we have the big screen which there’s tons of different uh options and vehicles and settings And holy cow. You can go through stuff, The big the coolest parts are the cameras Um been playing with these quite a bit view camera cargo cameras. So come on open up here. I’M gon na talk about them and they’re gon na pause to open up.
So a big fan of all the cameras they have Uh. My RHO has got even more cameras than this. So it’s interesting. I bought a 25 2025 Ram 1500 RHO for the channel for this year. Uh we have no moonroof here.
Interesting Lar spelled out there. The Ram logo there And then we’ll open this up. You have two ways open up. You have the little storage bin here, Then you have the big storage bin here with the engineering, the calculus kind of stuff going in there, I’m not a math wiz, No idea. What that is Uh there is a separate glove box here as well.
My son is playing around with and Larry be there. So, let’s hop out on this, We’ll take a more of a look at it and let this thing idle, while I’m getting out Okay, So uh as I did talk to you about the at the walk around with the tradesmen. This is the new mirror. It’S got! Uh power convex power going in power going out Um as the sales manager of the nation for Ram sales, uh boy, I boo buted his name there, Director of sales for Rambrand, told me this is the best mirror he thinks in the market.
Big fan of that mirror All right. Uh we have the Made in Mexico, which I’m going to point out, because tariffs are going on live this week. Who knows what the price going to be Right? Now? It’S 85,000, if I remember the sticker right, Yeah Uh, so it starts at uh.
64. 430. You add on the sport uh the Cumins diesel engines $ 12,000 and a few more options. The sport appearance has a sport hood. We’Ll talk more about that.20-In wheels You about 84545 is total price. Okay Uh I was looking at this. Payload is 2,9, So I thought that was kind of interesting. I thought it’d be more frankly, but it’s not All right. So there’s our exterior.
I had it all pretty for you, Then it snowed this morning, So yeah granite crystal metallic exterior color They’ve, made some changes to the grill. The cabin has not changed The bed lengths not changed. I think the sizes have changed and there’s taking a lot of criticism. There’S a lot of criticism on YouTube and places for not changing the cab And I’m like well. Why change something that works?
I I don’t know I. I appreciate people want something new, but this works. Every has the same kind of cab length now and bed length, and I don’t know I don’t see much of a reason to change, but as it would, people want change So we have the tox there. This is that sport hood, You can see it going up there, air inlet there and then air over there, keeping this diesel running Well. This is the new diesel sound And the idea is they took away.
Some of the some of the bad sounds cut. The good sounds in it, That’s what they told me: Uh 20-in wheels the Cumins badge there. I do have some step bars. There Been really nice this week, Tall truck Sport, Sport All right And then there’s our frame and setup there. With the coil link suspension.
You can see the coils back there and you see the the bars So not a leaf spring setup, which means it rides better on flat roads. I will tell you that on the uh somebody asked me about how it rides on the railroad tracks when you cross them. Well, it’s like riding a Bronco Better hold on both hands. Cuz, it’s a ride. I was shocked.
It’S like and the back end kicks out. So I need some weight back here Would really make a big difference, But yeah it’s a heavy duty truck Okay, there’s the Ram and the back with the chrome Larmy there hookups there for towing. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a uh fifth wheel, hookup in this, so no goo stick or anything. I did use my golf clubs this week, a couple times Been nice here in Nebraska this time of year Um, but we have a power hook up there and then some lights there. So that’s what we have for this bed here And then I did tow 19,000 lbs of the press event.
It toes really nice really easy, So uh go ahead and hop back to the video watch more of me, driving through the wonderland of Nebraska into Wyoming Woo. Okay, we’re getting about 25 mile mark and we have 20 6 mile per gallon, You can see I’m doing about 70. Mph Uh looks like about 1,600 1,700 RPMs. This is about what everybody’s doing in front of me. I have so many trucks in front of me and uh.
I just haven’t decided to pass them yet, But and we’re doing five over speed limits. So that’s, okay with me. I hate going much slower than that So uh overall, so far early impressions seats, comfortable Uh. Obviously, visibility is good, big truck Um. I feel very confident behind the wheel and I’ll do a little bit when I uh leave one of these cities about getting up to speed cuz.
It is very smooth and flawless with this new 8-speed automatic transmission, So pretty happy with that And uh 20.6. I I I’m not so in tune with all of the uh mile per gallon stuff with diesels these days, but I feel like that’s a pretty decent number. I feel like uh used to be. You were the teens and now to show a 20 in a truck of this size.
Height and weight is um feeling pretty good. Oh 20.7, So apparently we’ll see how I go Now. It is 52 out Uh, I’m going to head through western part of Nebraska up through Torington Wyoming and a little bit further to get my 50 mi mark. I think I got to go 5 to 10 mi more And I’m going to flip around come back And what that’s going to do and why I do that.
Is it’s the same. Roads about the same temperature same speeds and negates any wind that comes through this area. This area is well known for being a windy part of the country And uh. We typically the wind, comes from the northn northwest And that’s essentially what I’m driving I’m essentially driving west fair about north, So a little bit north. So I, if I flip around, it basically negates the wind impact, which is why I like doing this test going.
50 west 50 east. Although it’s not the most um interesting drive, That’s what it is Uh I will say like most heavy duties it. These trucks do ride better with weight in the bed. When we did the first drive event where I towed 19,000 lbs and I drove back to the hotel with like 1,000 lbs in the bed, I can tell you it was much smoother when I hit over the road vibrations. Is it bad in this truck?
No Is it better than a Ford Superduty, In my opinion, yeah I’ve Superduties have had problems with. As far as turning my back Uh to me, it’s on par with the GM heavy duties Um. It rides really nice, Even though, for a heavy duty truck. Let me clarify that Rides really nice heavy duty truck Uh. It doesn’t ride as nice, half ton as you’d expect, with a stiffer suspension and heavier weight of the Cumins diesel on this.
So that’s kind of where I’m at Oh 21.2. More, I talk the better. It gets Huh 21.3 All right.Let me uh, let me get down to 50 50 mi mark and I’ll update you at the turn and then we’ll keep doing kind of 25 mile updates. Okay, I want to show this So it’s 30 and then the speed limit over here is 70, So, let’s get on it. Let’S, let’s resume at it set at 75, I’m taking my foot off the accelerator. This is the truck doing it. So let me make sure I can get angle just right best.
I can I’m going hold this camera as steady as I can, So you can see shifting through the gears There’s like one more gear right in here Boy. It still feels like. I have plenty of power, Another shift, It’s noticeably quicker in my opinion and smoother when you are doing that 30 to 70, um, p or driving Right. So I I just left the town called Lingal um heading further west, I’m at 47 2 m uh miles 21.6 m per gallon.
I have noticed that going from 70 to 75, I’m losing about a half mile per gallon. So if you’re thinking about highway speeds, like I 80 down by Cheyenne, I think it’s 75 80 mph through there. So that would be kind of your difference there at highway speed. So I’m just going to go up here, get to 50 flip it around and head back east. Now, like I said I did this route cuz of the wind, I’m not seeing much wind today.
So I don’t know if that’s going to impact things at all, but I just I like to take as many variables as I possibly can So I’ll catch you. When I hit about the 75 milei mark, We’ll talk more about fuel economy, then Okay, let’s take a timeout and come back to the office and talk about this new truck a little bit more in detail. So we have some changes to 2025 model year, Big ones. First of all, the,045 footpounds torque. The high output option that was from 2024, is now standard across the board for 2025 Ram said they couldn’t build enough of them.
Last year, anyways They just made the higher output just standard Everybody wants,45 footpounds torque. They just want the biggest version of that truck engine, most capable it can be Done. They also made changes to 6.7. L Cumins Had a full walk around video of this one I’ll link to this one above And we talked about changes to the oil filter, fuel filter efficiency.
Here, efficiency there Made air flow a little bit better, So you’re just trying to make that engine run more efficient, And then we had the change from the six-speed to an 8-speed transmission. The idea behind that was we’re able to run at a higher speed unladen, lower RPM. You see me in this video talk about the RPM. I’M running at at different speeds. Give you an idea of the taste of what this engine is running at at those speeds, And that also allows them to take the higher rear end ratio of 373 down to like a 355 or a 342, because your those two gears, the extra additional transmission gears Can be set up and programmed in such a way that it mimics the 373 when you’re towing but gives you the efficiency of a 342 when you’re not towing, And so that’s the goal of that transmission.
So I was, I was looking at stuff and I tried to do a comparison. Never got the truck lined up, but I went to Google and I went to Fuel and I typed in you know what is the 2024 Ram? 7.7 6.7 L Cumins M per gallon?
They came back 14 city 17. Highway was what that said. I scanned this Reddit thread a little bit. Some people said it was like 13 14 city uh about 19 highway. One guy said it was like 20 was highway, Um, I’m seeing about 19 198 highway.
Looking at fuel Com you’re, looking you typed in 2025 Ram. I said crew cab. I said diesel any subm model. I had 16 17. 18 19 in that realm of range there of fuelups and things, And so I I was looking at that and it’s I’m actually kind of glad.
I didn’t look at that beforehand and I’m glad I just withdrove and started doing collecting the data, because I think I’d have a different response in the video. If I knew then what I know now, because I’m seeing numbers in the early 20s and those numbers on the screen show, I should be in the high teens, So wow, Okay, we’re doing about uh 66 mph 21.8 mile per gallon. I keep getting a little bit higher as I’m going. It is uh 65 through here I have set at 70.
I got some traffic in front of me, so I haven’t been able to pass them yet, but I’m curious if I can get back to 22. So I’d gotten down to like 21.1 doing 75 mph for a period of time and now I’m going back upwards. I probably misspoke a little bit. It’S probably more like a mile per gallon between 65 and 75, not a half mile per gallon, but uh overall, pretty comfortable drive um for a heavy duty truck so far And we’re going to get back to the house and give you the final number.
Okay, just pulled back to the house and I apologize. I went over 100 miles by 0.1. Apologies Uh 22.3 mile per gallon is my number and I think that’s pretty wow for a truck this size Again.
3/4 ton heavy. What capability of it is Um yeah. I think it’s pretty damn good. What do you guys think Put your comments down below Be curious? What your thoughts are on, whether this is a good number or if you expected more a 3/4 ton which, if you do what number would you expect, because this it’s pretty mind-blowing in my opinion?
