Andre, I’m going to say something that a lot of you guys out there are going to hate, and that is that heavy duty, off-road trucks are just simply pointless: off-road, whoa, whoa whoa. What do you? What do you mean? I just think they’re too big they’re too heavy they’re too cumbersome, and that makes them no fun off-road and today we’re going to compare to what do we got well. We have a brand new 2025 Ram 2500 with the newcom and an 8-speed ZF automatic and it’s a heavy duty Rebel and, of course, we’ve got our long-term Chevy Silverado 2500 Trail Boss.
So let’s hit the road and find out just how crap these things are. Forget roads how about fins and things in Moab Trails: let’s hit the trails. I have to ask Andre how much does that new Ram Rebel cost? Whoa whoa whoa uh? Let’S save that for later.
Okay, we’ll save it for later, but that to me suggest it cost a lot. I will tell you how much this cost us. It was 77 and we got like a $ 3,000 discount, so it was about $ 74,000. Now this is a 2025 Silverado. 2500 Trail Boss, so it is the off-road one and is yours: the rebel yeah, our trucks are very similar actually because you have kind of a mid-grade off-road trim, the trail boss.
I have also very similar in the ram lineup um, the heavy duty Rebel. It’S not a power wagon, but it still has a few off-road features, including really beefy tires. I think the thing that gets me the most excited about your truck is it’s got the new cumin? Well, that’s that’s. Why we’re here actually is because we want to see how the new cin and the new 8speed behave.I have all the torqus and a lot of Gears how you loving that truck. Can you see out the front or is that big old bulge on the the hood causing some issues? I cannot see anything over the hood and I am driving based on my camera system. Uh a lot of the time which I I’m not a huge fan of, because it’s kind of a flat image uh, but so far so good and how’s the ride. Is it squishy?
Well, it’s not the most squishy ride. I would say I I think both you and I need more sidewall in our tires four Side, walless hood, so I do have a rear air helpers. I have airbags in the rear, but I’m not Towing, and it’s not really going to help me. Oh, so close keep keep going, you’re, fine, all right, no Chin scratching, but how about butt? Pretty impressive Andre!
You didn’t scratch your butt ha okay. Now I want to see you uh. Do this obstacle all right Andre? How am I do? How am I doing you’re doing great keep moving, keep moving, keep going.
I think you’re going to be fine, you’re fine, aoo oops, you touched it. I touched it huh, the lower part. I had to turn my parking assist off. Oh no! Oh, that’s a little bit of your tailpipe.
Oh it’s my tail pipe huh! Yeah! That’S! Okay! It’S your big diesel pipe.
Can I do a baloney cut? No you’re, fine, Andre, I have to say the wind. There goes uh to the ram yeah. I think uh slightly smaller dimensions of the ram, because it’s still the same wheelbase as before, which is about 10 in shorter than yours. I think that helped me a lot yeah, so uh, one zero Ram cuz.
I scratched my sh chin and I uh scratched my ex pipe uh, who would have thought guys. We’Ve all been there you’re out Offroad, but you don’t know where the nearest cell service is. If you need help well, our friends over at Onyx off-road have a really cool option. Now it’s called sell service layers it integrates with AT & T T-Mobile and Verizon and you’ll know exactly where the next area, where you’ll be in service is now. This is a phenomenal feature if you’re out off-road alone and as I always like to say, ride, more worry, less and onx Offroad makes it happen guys if you want to find out more click on the link below sign up for onx Offroad and receive a discount Using our promo code tell me: how much does that Ram Rebel HD newcoming cost all right, so it has basically the premium package um, not just the rebel package, because I do have a large um infotainment screen.I have a passenger infotainment screen um and I have all the goodies um. It’S 999,000 bucks wait did I thought I heard you say $ 99,000 you’re. Joking right. Tell me: how much does it really cost uh? I I’m not joking.
I I’m saying it’s $ 99,000. Oh, my God is 25 more Grand than this truck. I could buy a side by side for that. I could buy a used Jeep for that I could buy a boat for that. What what did they did?
They cover the seats in Gold. Where is that 25,000 gone dude um? They did not cover it in Gold um, but I mean I didn’t price. This truck ran, but you could also get a $ 99,000 GMC Off-Road heavy duty, but that’ be like the at4 X that’d, be the one uh model trim higher than this one and we’re basically doing Apples to Apples when you’ve got Trail Boss versus Rebel. So don’t don’t pretend like that’s a normal uh comparison.
Yes, I absolutely agree uh. This Rebel is very expensive, um and well. That’S why we’re doing this I mean I want to see. If it’s actually you know, can it actually off-road or is it all show? Look, I think both these guys can off-road, there’s, no doubt that they can off-road, but the question is: are they the right tool for the right job?I have no doubt that this is a great towing truck. So is that I have no doubt that they’re great cross country trucks but, like I said, even with my cameras, I can’t see over my by the way real hood scoop uh. I don’t think yours is real. Is it no? My hood scope is not functional, so so, like I said, I mean they can off-road, but there’s a reason that, over the years that we’ve been coming here, there’s more side by sides than there are now jeeps and trucks and that’s because it’s kind of the right Tool for the right job right, it’s small!
It’S easy to maneuver! You can see everywhere. This thing is like piloting the old Queen Mary across the Pacific, except we’re doing it across slick Rock you’re, not wrong. God help us if we were actually going through some trees. Luckily, there’s no uh, no obstacles here that are going to get in our way like that all right, uh I’ll move over here uh and then we can decide whether we want to take the easy way or the hard way.
I noticed the Tacomas are taking the easy way. I think we’re going to have to take the hard way. Oh look at those little Tacomas a well. The bikers took the hard way huh yeah yeah, the acers took the hard way and some folks I like the old Willies uh or do you say Willis – are taking the easy way uh. What I’m noticing Andre is just a lot more side by sides on the trail yeah.
I have noticed that as well and a lot of them are enclosed, so they have big doors and windows yeah. It is definitely the start of the off-road season in Moab, cuz uh we’re getting a lot of traffic now and also like a month ago. There was nobody here right, I was here a month ago and it was gloriously empty. No, it’s not that’s! Okay! It’S the season all right, the question Andre: are we going to take the easy option or the hard option only hard, only hard hard option? It is all right all right. Let’S do this. Let’S do this, so here’s the problem with heavy duty trucks. Let me show you: this is what I see.
That’S that’s what I’m looking at this is also very stressful, cuz, there’s tons of people behind us. We don’t want to keep them uh waiting, so I’ll just pull over and let them go ahead of me all right. So just like Roman, I cannot see much outside the hood, but this is what I’m seeing using my camera and thankfully there are tire marks here and also little arrows in a few places that help me or help somebody navigate this and if I use my memory And if I use um the cameras which I have a lot of, I should be able to go over. This question is: are we going to take the easy way or the hard way down the frame vendor? In other words, if you go very far right, you kind of miss that big ledge uh, whereas if you go straight down, you go right over the big ledge, so I think we got to test these trucks out Andre.
I think we got to go for it. Well, maybe not all the way, but partially a difficult way. Oh we’re going all the way dude we may be bending some frames. Are you sure that’s a company asset you’re driving there well you’re a company asset too Andre, so be careful all right, a tiny bit more passenger and then you’re fine. I think I think you’re, okay, I’m feel like I’m about to go over.
You have another foot, slow, oh nothing hit. That’S good. Now go go very slowly because your rear hitch might be damaged. I’M trying wow okay frame vender in the books and no frames were bent. Uh.Let’S see how you do so. Maybe that wasn’t a completely all the way difficult path, but you did a good job. Do you guys love car and trucks? Well, I’ve got three great podcasts that you will enjoy listening to, because we are deep into cars and trucks and talking about trucks. Right here is my man, Andre and case working on the next episode of talking trucks, where they delve deep into everything that is truckish, including breaking truck news.
Talking about the different models that are coming up and, of course, tearing down the world of trucks, as only Andre and case, know how to do. But if trucks are not your thing and cars are sort of your thing check out, carish our podcast, that is sort of Co, adjacent with Jen and Mary and Mary being the part of carish and finally, Tommy and myself talk all about cars at tfl’s car chat. Where we look into the newest models, talk about what’s happening in the world of cars, break down the latest news. All three of these podcasts are available. Wherever you get your podcast, so check them out, I think you’ll really enjoy them.
People may be wondering why aren’t we aired down and that’s exactly the reason we’re not aired down, because we need all the height we can get on this vinced things Trail, because if we air down, then we’re going to be dragging our butts scratching our asses scratching. Our chins and bending our frame, so traditionally we don’t do a lot of airing down on this particular Trail. There are other Trails where there’s sand and you need a lot more grip that you do air down, but slick rock is very sticky unless it’s snowy. The new comments is approaching the frame Bender by the way, I’m very pleased with this powertrain. I do have 400 30 horsepower at about 2,800 RPM and I have 1,075 pbet of torque, which is 100 PB feet of torque more than Roman’s Duramax.
So I’m quite happy with how much lowend torque I have the torque maxes out at about 1,800 RPM and the 8speed is a huge Improvement Andre. I think the 8 speeed is a huge Improvement. Now, let’s just be completely transparent. This truck belongs to RAM and I feel, worse, actually breaking a vehicle that doesn’t belong to us. So uh.
Keep that in mind. Oh God did you have to say something all right, I’m in first gear I’m going to try to crawl 6 in you’re going over. That was not a happy Club. I think I may have hit the front suspension member. You may have hit it.
It’S fine Rams are tough. Oh you hit your tailpipe and you hit your hits. You did a little bit of scratching Andre. That would be Andre’s tailpipe right there. Is it now an oval or is it just kind of up and down it’s a rhombus come on Rebel?
You could do this. Ah, so now I think we’re even one to one yes, one to one and now for the tiebreaker One Tree Hill. This is One Tree Hill and you can actually uh hit the truck on the tree because uh, if the rear Locker doesn’t lock lock, which mine hopefully will because it’s not like yours, electronic it’s manual, then you will lose traction so uh. What’S a horsepower and torque in this truck? Well, I’m a little bit bummed that you have more horsepower.
You have 470, so 40 more horsepower than me, but you have 100 pbet of torque less than I do 975, and you know all that horsepower and torque are really going to be useless here on One Tree Hill. Unless I was Towing you up the hill here we go One Tree Hill come come on Silverado. Oh I’m hitting a little bit, I’m using momentum, wow! Oh, it did slide toward the tree. But luckily, luckily I only came within like a foot of the tree, but I made it that was a little sketchy dudee that looked scary.
Your G80 kicked in. Finally, but it took a while yeah that’s kind of the problem with it isn’t it. It always takes a while. You might want a little momentum coming up this Andre, I’m just giving you a little hint here, because your passenger side front tire will hit this crack and then you’re going to lose a little bit of H. Poke there don’t worry.
I have all the torqux now this is the downside to not airing down right here. Most of this Trail, it’s smart not to air down, but here you do want to air down nice. You made that look easy, yeah dude, so my locker was enabled and it was able to just kind of uh Power me up yeah. I don’t smell any rubber all right, but we have more fairly tough ones. Uh tough obstacles, especially the butt scratcher, coming up.
all right, Andre we’re coming up to the final obstacle, which is the ass scratcher, and this is of course, the ultimate test of approach and departure, angle, uh and uh. We have uh. We have pancakes some exhaust pipes on this one before so um. Let’S see how the Ram does compared to the alado. Now this is my least favorite obstacle um.
I think, because the bigger the truck, the more the pain basically um and, for example, it’s easy for you to be uh to scratch. Your rear, bumper, also, which is becoming more expensive, yeah and the longer the wheelbase, the more you’re going to scratch or just hit uh. But right now I think we’re at two points to Ram one point to the Silverado, so this is going to be either the higher or the complete blow up. Well, your truck is bigger than mine. So, who knows now for all of you folks who have watched us do these fins and things tests before you might be asking yourself?
Why aren’t we doing the wall and why aren’t we doing the wall Andre well, are we doing it? No, we can’t do it. Dude that would be you you would. You would beat yourself like a ttis. I mean the wall is all about breakover angle and I can’t think of longer truck than a heavy duty truck to try to take up.
Basically, you know a triangle yeah. No, I I think you would need to do a you. You would need to have a Silverado ZR2 bison for that. True that okay, well, let’s uh, let’s get the ass scratcher out of the way uh I’ll go first uh you shoot me and let’s see how uh how the Silverado does okay hold on. I need to come up.
Uh come down to you um and it’s very difficult for me to walk yeah people don’t realize on camera how steep this is, but it’s even hard to walk. Lo down this remember you’re company asset, Andre, so be careful, there’s a tornado here! I don’t know. What’S going on, this is going to hurt the truck more than me. Okay, now straight wheel, straight: okay, here’s where the chin digs in that’s the easy slowly.
Oh you hit your bumper a little okay watch, my butt. Now I’m scratching I’m scratching. Oh, I scratched lot lot of scratching. Okay. I believe that was all hitch all right.
Well, that’s good! Why don’t you film? The Hitch, see how much damage I did a little bit of the bumper a little bit on the bumper and a bit on the hitch? Okay, all right, so I put it in first gear. Oh you just crunched your uh either.
That was your exhauster step, so I’m already not doing so. Well all right come on straight down. Okay, you’re about to hit your chin, yeah you’re, doing a little digging, not too much well now, you’re doing a little bit of plowing quite a bit of plowing there. It’S just saw sand, but let’s see the back, I come straight back. You also plowed a little bit too, but I think I did maybe did a little bit more about you’re about to hit your step.
Is it going to rip it off? Uh might nothing you can do, though. Oh you’re scratching your bumper keep going and now you’re doing. Oh keep going. Oh yeah, oh gosh!
You did a little damage to the rear. Bumper uh don’t show. Nick Nick is the pr manager for um nothing to see Nick Nick. Nothing to see here, it’ll buff out. Well, I think we hit them the exact same place as you did.I did yeah, so it’s kind of tied except I don’t have a a a little sensor there all right come on over here. Let me show you something Andre: what’s that well, I’m going to go with that was a tie, the ass scratcher, they both kind of didn’t perform. Ideally, but let me show you this come on. Look at this. Look at this.
Look at all. What wait that plowed, that much yeah look at all that Nick don’t watch this! He he’s not going to watch this he’s not going to watch it. So you going to take some uh Moab breed sand home with you wait! What what is this?
Is there a couple of w, but this truck was also off-roading at the event yeah yeah, so I think I think it’s a wash. So basically it’s uh two points to one, but there is a tiebreaker Andre. What is that? The fact that this cost $ 25,000? More and that gives me at least 2,000 points, so it’s 2,01 points to 1 Point all right.
Well, there you have it guys, that’s that’s the bottom line seriously. Look I came in here grumpy and I’m having a hell of a time, but there’s a reason. There are no other heavyduty trucks, roaming, PS and things. It’S all when I first started coming out here it was all dirt bikes and then it went to jeeps and trucks and now it’s all side by size and there’s a reason for that right. You want the right tool for the right job and I’m going to say it.
These tools are better for towing and Hauling. What is the payload on your truck Andre uh? You don’t want to know, oh how about another article? How about we do a towing it’s under 2,000 lb, all right! Let’S do a towing article on the eye, Gauntlet, yeah and come back we’ll do a towing, article and then Andre can explain it I’ll I’ll!
Explain it yeah another for another day, guys thanks for watching it was such a beautiful day out here. I’M so grateful that you guys are watching and let us let us do this craziness! Oh Moab is just heav Andre as always, and it’s not even hot right. Now, it’s not hot. As always.
This is Andre and Roman saying thanks for watching we’ll see you next time, ciao, sweet.
